Childminder:

A childminder is an individual who provides Nanny housekeepers services within their own home. They have the important task of ensuring the safety, well-being, and development of children from various families, each with their own unique religious, cultural, and dietary needs.

In their role, childminders are responsible for organizing age-appropriate and engaging activities, creating a secure environment, and establishing a sense of trust with parents who rely on them to care for their children in the best possible way.

To work as a childminder, it is necessary to be registered with Ofsted and adhere to the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, which applies to children aged 0-5 years.

Becoming a Childminder:

1. To start the process of becoming a certified childminder, the initial step is to get in touch with the Early Years team within your Local Authority. They will provide you with guidance on the childminding process, an application package, and information regarding the early years’ foundation stage (EYFS).

2. The EYFS establishes the criteria for the education, growth, and well-being of children aged from birth to five years old. It also outlines the requirements that must be fulfilled to ensure the safety and welfare of the child or children in your care.

Supporting children’s growth and development through various activities:

– Mathematics: Engaging children in numerical concepts and problem-solving skills.
– Understanding the World: Encouraging exploration and curiosity about the environment and different cultures.
– Expressive Arts and Design: Promoting creativity and self-expression through art, music, and drama.
– Communication and Language: Fostering effective communication skills and language development.
– Physical Development: Enhancing gross and fine motor skills through active play and movement.
– Personal, Social, and Emotional Development: Nurturing self-awareness, empathy, and social skills.
– Literacy: Cultivating reading, writing, and comprehension abilities.

In addition, you must also:

1. Successfully finish a 12-hour pediatric first-aid course, which must be renewed every 3 years.
2. Obtain a police clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for yourself and any individuals aged over 16 residing in your home.
3. Obtain appropriate insurance coverage, including Public Liability Insurance.
4. Be self-employed.
5. Either be a homeowner or have an agreement with the leaseholder of your property allowing you to operate a business.
6. Undergo an Ofsted home inspection and an interview to ensure your suitability for caring for children.
7. Undergo a medical check-up.
8. Provide two references that can be verified.
9. Complete an introductory training course, such as the Nanny housekeepers Help Early Years Care and Education Course, which covers all aspects of Nanny housekeepers  and provides an introduction to the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.

What will be the total expenses involved?

Early Years Foundation Stage Framework training is available through Nanny housekeepers Help at a discounted rate of £189, which is half the cost of other training providers. The Pediatric First Aid Course is also offered by Nanny housekeepers Help for £120. Additionally, there is a fee of £35 for Ofsted Registration. The cost of insurance may vary. Moreover, setting up the workplace with toys, games, safety equipment for children, kitchen essentials for cooking and eating could amount to approximately £200.

Requirements to become a Childminder:

A profession in childminding is well-suited for individuals who possess a passion for nurturing and educating children. This role is particularly suitable for individuals such as mothers, teachers, nursery workers, nannies, or social workers who aspire to establish their own business within the comfort of their own home.
